Consecrated Day Celebration at Sanyasa, Bengaluru

Sanyasa, the only Institute of Consecrated Life in India, organized a three day seminar on a relevant theme addressing the present scenario of India “Politics of Exclusivity, Division and Intimidation: A Critical Response from the Consecrated Persons” from 1st to 3rd February 2018. The seminar began on 1st February at 9:00 a.m. with an enthronement of the Word of God followed by prayer and lighting of the lamp. Then, Fr. Arul Jesu Robin cmf, the director of Sanyasa gave an overview of the seminar and welcomed each one warmly. Rev. Fr. Jacob Arakkal, cmf, the president of Sanyasa and the Provincial of the Bangalore Province gave an inaugural address in which he emphasized the prophetic role of the consecrated persons in the present scenario of India.  About 125 men and women religious participated actively and benefitted hugely from the seminar.

Fr. (Dr.) Sabu George Koottarappallil receives the Best Principal Award

Rev. Dr. Sabu George Koottarappallil, principal of St. Claret College, Bangalore, received the Best Principal Award during the Republic Day Achievers Award, 2018 from Integrated Intelligent Research (IIR) on January 18, 2018 at Loyola-ICAM College of Engineering and Technology, Chennai. St. Claret College also bagged the prestigious Best Upcoming Private College Award. Two of our faculty members, Asst. Prof. Prakash Chandra Behera and Asst. Prof. Chinmaya Dash received the Best Faculty Award and the Best Exam Cell Coordinator Awards respectively. There were above 750 nominations from 8 countries. They did a 360-degree appraisal in finalizing the Award winners. Rev. Dr. Sabu George also received Shikshana Ratna (Best Teacher) award from Janmabhoomi Samskrutika Samsta on January 4, 2018.

Ministries of Lector and Acolyte

On 18 November 2017, 7 of our 2nd year theology students (2 from the Society of the Holy Spirit) made their first step in participating in the ministerial priesthood in the Catholic Church. During the Holy Eucharistic celebration Rev. Fr. Jacob Arakkal John, the Provincial Superior, conferred the orders of Lector and Acolyte. Father Provincial expressed his sentiments of joy and hope, seeing seven young missionaries readying themselves for God’s work, and thanked them for the gift of their commitment in the Claretian Congregation. He urged them to strive to live more fully their missionary vocation and to be moulded more perfectly in the likeness of Jesus the Master and our founder, Father Claret.

Annual Feast Day Celebration and Adult Baptisms, Doddaballapur

On 02 July 2017 St. Peter’s Church, Doddaballapur, celebrated the Annual Parish Feast. As a preparation, Triduum with special prayers and preaching was celebrated. Vicar General of the archdiocese,Msgr. S. Jayanathan presided at the solemn Festive Mass; many priests and religious also joined the celebration along with the parishioners.

After the Mass, the image of St. Peter, the Patron, was taken in procession along the town with much devotion and piety, in spite of the rain. Indeed, it was an expression of Faith and witness by the parish community. The unity, sacrifice and hard work of the parishioners was appreciated by all.

Earlier, on the Easter Sunday, the parish community was overjoyed with 17 adults receiving Baptism. The community is preparing 30 more adults who are waiting to be baptised. The parish continues to grow steadily with active spiritual and social activities. Special attention is given to Faith building, by intensive Catechism classes and regular spiritual activities. Social concerns like helping the poor children are also given priority.

Inauguration of Literary Association, Claretian Seminary

The activities of the Claretian Seminary Literary Association for the year 2017-18 were inaugurated on 22 June 2017 by the Chief Guest of the day, Dr Sheinty Jacob, Principal, M S Ramaiah College of Education, in the presence of Rector, Rev. Fr. Xavier E. Manavath.

Today, we are moving into a world where communication is of great importance. So, to be an effective missionary today means to be an effective communicator. We aim not merely at the completion of an academic programme but at the integral and holistic growth of the individuals who would be equipped to carry out the mission of Christ efficiently.  Claretian Seminary Literary Association is one of such platforms, wherein the students are given varied and creative ways to excel in their talents and skills.

The inauguration was made more eventful by the students through their spirited performance of Speech, Creative Art, Dance, Comic etc. The Chief Guest in her inaugural address congratulated the participants and urged the young missionary students to inculcate the art of communication so as to be effective Servants of the Word.

Valedictory Function, Bhusar

St. Joseph’s Community College, Busar, Jharkhand, which offers skill training mainly for the school-dropout youth who are unable to pursue their studies due to various social, economic and political reasons, had its seventh valedictory function on 20 June 2017.

The batch of thirty-two students completed their training at the community college; twenty students of Nursing Assistant Course and twelve students of Motor Driving and Mechanism received their certificates during the valedictory function. Fr. Joseph Panthalady, the senior most priest of the Diocese of Daltonganj was the chief guest and Fr. Sanjay Gidh, the Diocesan Youth Director was the guest of honour on the occasion. The cultural programme organized by the students added more colour to the event.

During the valedictory function, the nursing students took the oath of commitment and whole-hearted service.  All the students received their certificates from the chief guest; while the driving students received their driving licence on the same day. The chief guest requested the management of the Community College to organize wide range of agricultural training as well. The parents and guardians of the students, and the people from the neighbouring village also were present during the function. The event was covered by the local newspapers as well. All the students who passed out have also received job placements.

The next batch of nursing students has already been selected. For this purpose there was an interview and screening camp conducted on 28-29 June 2017. Nineteen students have already been selected, who are to take admission on the 16July 2017.

Common Novitiate Programme

Together Towards Growth - with this theme in mind, the Common Novitiate Programme (CNP) was inaugurated on 17 June 2017 at Claret Bhavan Novitiate House. The Claretian Novices put up a very meaningful skit based on the theme. Rev. Bro. Jerome (Patrician) gave presidential address and officially declared opened the CNP for this year.

Common Novitiate Programme is an initiative taken up by the Claret Bhavan community. There are 15 other congregations who join this common programme. The aims and objectives of this venture is to bring together the neighbouring novices for holistic experience and growth. During the academic year many input sessions are conducted by experienced formators.  The important topics such as Aims and Objectives of Novitiate, Daily Journal Writings, Liturgy and Music, Psycho-Spiritual and Psycho-Sexual Integration, Community Life, Prophets, Vocation Discernment and Charism, etc. The forum also conducts common Recollections and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, besides common celebrations of Christmas, New Year and Easter.

Inauguration of New Academic Year, Sanyasa Institute of Consecrated Life

The spring time in Sanyasa dawned with the coming of the new batch of students for the academic year 2017-18. This inter-congregational family is blessed with 49 religious men and women from various congregations for the current academic year.

Out of 49 students that we have this academic year, five are for first year PG course, four for second year PG, and the rest for either diploma or certificate courses. The inaugural Mass of the academic year was held on the 16 June. Rev. Fr. Jacob Arakkal John, the President of the Institute and Provincial of Bangalore Province, was the main celebrant. Rev. Fr. Arul Jesu Robin, the Director of the institute introduced the main celebrant to the gathering and expressed his gratitude for his availability and guidance.

Inauguration of the Academic Year, Athani

“The differently abled do not need our Sympathy but they need an opportunity”

The new academic year 2017-18 at SanehaJyothi Centre was inaugurated on 10June 2017. Mr. Kumar Hitalmani PSI, Athani and Dr. Sachin Mirajkar (Child Specialist) were the chair person and guest of the day respectively during the function. In his inaugural address, the PSI of Athanitaluk, Mr. Kumar Hitalmani, appreciated the ministry and selfless service that the Centre does towards the upliftment of the visually impaired and encouraged the students to make the best use of the opportunities given to them. Dr. Sachin Mirajkar inspired the Students with his motivational orientation and promised to do whatever support he could for the students. On the occasion, the inmates of SnehaJyothi Centre performed various cultural programmes which kept the guests spellbound. This year there are 27 Boys and 15 Girls who are visually challenged and 6 semi-orphan boys in the Centre.

During the last academic year three students completed SSLC; six students completed PUC; one student completed graduation and ten students appeared for the first year of graduation. Among the inmates, three girls and two boys were selected for job placements by various agencies during the last academic year.

Environment Day Celebration,AC School, Jalahalli

Keeping up with global concerns and to teach the same to the students, AC School observed World Environment day on 05 June 2017.

The teachers and students of were all dressed up in green, the day began with a prayer for our Mother Earth and students presented thoughts and facts about the environment. A row of events were arranged for the day, which included cycle rally to the neighbourhood, planting of saplings, vertical gardening and poster making. The highlight of the event was a concept known as ‘Seed Ball’;also known as Earth Balls, consists of a variety of different seeds rolled within a ball of clay. Seed bombing is a technique of introducing vegetation to land by throwing or dropping seed balls during rainy season. It was an added advantage as all the activities held in the school campus was covered by ETV Kannada news channel and telecasted. Children were educated about the importance of seed ball,who made around 4000 seed balls with utmost interest.

First Profession, Perpetual Profession and Renewal of Profession, 2017

Once again the Feast of the Visitation of the B. V. M, 31 May, marked the day of Professions and Renewal of Profession in the Province of Bangalore. In the morning, at Claret Bhavan, Carmelaram, nine (eight for Bangalore province and one for Northeast Delegation) of our novices made their First Profession during the Solemn Eucharist presided at by Rev. Fr. Jacob Arakkal John, Provincial Superior of Bangalore.

In the evening, at Claretian Seminary, Malleswaram, 15 of our students renewed their temporary profession; and two of our students, John Bosco and Martin Joseph, made their Perpetual Profession.

For Both these celebrations, the family members of those professing, a good number of Claretian conferrers, neighbours and well-wishers were present. Indeed, in today’s rapidly secularizing world, these celebrations bore witness to the Call to Consecrated Life in the Church.

Summer Camp for Training in Dance, Barwadih

In order to provide opportunities to the poor and aspiring students, a three-week intensive summer dance camp was organised in St. Claret School, Barwadih, from 18 May-09 June 2017. There were 38 participants from different neighbouring schools and parishes. The tutors from NavSadhana, Varanasi, Miss NeelamRawat and Sabina, efficiently conducted the camp, which all the participants benefited immensely. The students were taught the basis in different forms of dance, with the intention of helping them to pursue further study in the same. To conclude the camp, the children put up performance of different forms of dance and all were taken up by their talent.

Claret DhyanaBrundham Retreats, Bhattiprolu

St. Claret DhyanaBrundham had its privilege to conduct retreats at various parishes and institutes for the spiritual renewal of the faithful. During the last three months the team could venture in to different dioceses such as Vishakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Kurnool, Eluru, Hyderabad and Adilabad. The team also conducted retreat in English for the sisters of St. Aloysius and St. Ann’s at Vijayawada. As people benefited spiritually, they expressed their gratitude towards this Claretian initiative and availability.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Christ the Redeemer Church Annual Feast

The annual feast of Christ the Redeemer was celebrated with traditional devotion and piety with various programmes on 23 April 2017 at Bhattiprolu Parish. Rt. Rev. Dr.ChinnabathiniBhagyaiah, Bishop of Guntur, presided at the solemn celebration of the Eucharist.  In his homily, bishop exhorted the people to spread the joy and peace of the Risen Lord through their life witness. It was such a graceful moment as many priests, religious and faithful witnessed and participated in the festal celebration. The celebration of the Eucharist was followed by the felicitations to the Bishop; colorful cultural programme by the St. Claret Youth and Children further enhanced the beauty of the celebration and strengthened the spirit of unity among the faithful.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Children’s Camp and Youth Meet

On 7-8 June 2017 a two-days Children’s Camp was at Christ the Redeemer Church, Bhattiprolu.  Around 100 Children from the Parish and Sub-Stations made use of the opportunity.  Frs. Santhosh, Chinnanna, Bro. Vinay and Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny guided the sessions and Fr. Chinnanna through his action songs kept the days alive and active.  Second day, presiding at the Holy Eucharist, during the homily Fr. SavyPuthuserry highlighted important spiritual elements that every child should practice.  The students were divided into different age groups and various competitions were conducted and the winners were awarded.

This was followed by the Youth Meet on 11 June 2017. The day began with celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Fr. SanthoshKariammakil, the Parish Priest, wholeheartedly welcomed everyone for the celebrations dedicated to the Youth of the Parish.  He gave an inspiring message for the youth and the parents in his homily. Sr. Sudha Rani animated a session on qualities of Leadership; Fr. MamudhuChinnanna spoke about the role and challenges of Youth in the Church and Society. Concluding programmes included games and competitions conducted by Sr. Sudha Rani, Fr. Chinnanna and Bro. Vinay.  The response and participation of the youth in the Seminar and other activities were really encouraging.

Seminar on Study Skills Techniques, Narsannapeta

A seminar on study skills was conducted for high school student at St. Claret School, Narsannapeta by Squadron Leader Jayasimha. Squadron leader Jayasimha, the president of World Memory Sports Council for India, the only Indian to hold maximum Guinness Records in the world, the nation’s leading trainer in memory and soft skills, taught a few techniques, simple and effective to remember the lessons that are taught.

The seminar was effective, beneficial and genuine to channelize the blooming minds of the young learners. Mr.Jayasimha’s seminar has left an indelible influence in the minds of our students. Principal, Fr. Pasala. Anthony especially appreciated availability and services of Mr.Jayasimha in training the students.

St. Claret English Medium School, Narsannapeta, is well known in many mandals of the Srikakulam district like Narsannapeta, Kotabommali, Jelumur, Polaki, etc. because of its academic standards and discipline. As in the past years, in the year 2016-17 to the school got very good results in the SSC Examination. A total of 84 students had appeared for the public examination and all of them passed, majority of them with distinctions and seventeen of them got 10/10. It’s the fruit of the dedicated faculty and management and the hard work of the students.

Consecrated Day Celebration at Sanyasa, Bengaluru

Sanyasa, the only Institute of Consecrated Life in India, organized a three-day Congress on ‘Communion for Mission - Joyful Fraternal Religious Community for God’s Kingdom’, which began on the 2nd of February 2017. The seminar began on the very day dedicated to consecrated life, at 9:00 a.m. with an enthronement of the Word of God followed by prayer and lighting of the lamp and declaring the opening of the Seminar. Fr. Arul Jesu Robin CMF, the director of Sanyasa gave an overview of the seminar. About 200 men and women religious participated enthusiastically and benefitted immensely from the seminar.

Renowned men and women religious spoke on “Communion for Mission” from various aspects. There were papers presented on the themes like “Mission-shaped Communities: Biblical Inspiration”, “Anthropological and Theological Traits of Mission-shaped Communities”, “Founding Vision: The Essence of a Religious Community”, “The Importance of Eucharist and the Word of God in Religious Communities”, “Formation for Fraternal Life in Community”, “Challenges for Living together and a Way Forward”, “Intimacy and Friendship in Religious Communities”, “Compassionate Care for the Elders, Sick and Difficult Members of the Community”, “Joyful Community Life – The First Apostolate”, “Authority at the Service of Fraternity and Mission”.  The speakers challenged the participants to start afresh to make the religious communities a mission-shaped community and be partners of the Holy Spirit.  

The Congress posed many challenges to the religious: awareness that we are in the era of the Holy Spirit; conformation to the person of Christ; fueled in the charism of the founder; making the community life a celebration. It also gave time for interactions between many young religious whole heartedly participated in it. On the final day, there was also panel discussion in which many questions raised by the religious were answered by resource persons. The Congress came to an end on 4th February 2017 with the solemn Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Fr. George Panthalanickal, CMF, the Superior and Secretary at Sanyasa.

In collaboration with Sanyasa, Fr. Xavier Manavath, CMF, the Rector of Claretian Seminary, Malleswaram, Bengaluru organized a one day seminar on the same theme on 29th January 2017 at Malleswaram itself. Above 150 religious participated and appreciated our effort in offering quality service for the ongoing formation of the consecrated persons of India.

Fortnight Anti-Leprosy Day & Sumanahalli Dr. Hansen’s Award Ceremony, Sumanahalli

Sumanahalli Society is now developed with multifarious activities reaching out to six groups of destitute people, viz. those affected by LEPROSY, HIV/AIDS, Disabilities, Orphan Girls, Street Boys and Children in Conflict with Law. It is 40 years since the Government invited the Bangalore Archdiocese to establish a Centre for the welfare and rehabilitation of the leprosy affected persons and other destitute groups.   

      

Today, Sumanahalli LRTC (Leprosy Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre) is  taking care of five Leprosy colonies in Bangalore and coordinating with 32 other Leprosy colonies in Karnataka, a hundred bedded Rehabilitation Centre, an ongoing case detection and distribution of Multi Drug Therapy, information Education and Communication (IEC) activities, Educational Programme  (both Formal and Non Formal) , Capacity building, Vocational Training Programme, Prevention of Impairment and Deformity, Follow-up Services and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Activities reaching out to 75 BBMP wards and beyond.

Recently, Anti-Leprosy Fortnight Programme was inaugurated by the Government Leprosy division on 30 January 2017 at   our Leprosy colonies in Chikkanayakanahalli and Sarjapura Road- Bengaluru. The programme was organized jointly by District leprosy officer and Sumanahalli Society. The Taluk Medical officer, PHC medical officers, KannahalliPanchayat President and Panchayat Members were present.  The Joint Director (Leprosy) was the chief guest.

During the fortnight, from 30 January to 13 February 2017, Sumanahalli Society conducted several special activities in the given area by creating awareness through Power Point Presentation and Movies, showing the scientific facts about Leprosy which gives a clear explanation and the real need to fight against Leprosy. During this programme, besides different other activities, 6,500 students were screened in seven schools and through BBMP (Megacity Survey) 12,500 families were surveyed, covering over 62,500 people.

Along with Anti-Leprosy Fortnight Concluding Programme, Sumanahalli Dr. Hansen’s Award Ceremony was held on 02March 2017 at The Indian Institution of World Culture in the presence of Rev. Dr. Jacob Arakkal John CMF, Vice Chairman of Sumanahalli Society, the Chief Guest, Dr.Pushparaj, the Joint Director of Leprosy of Karnataka, Mr. Jose M.V, Director of AIFO Bengaluru, and Dr. Prasad, along with other invited guests from various institutions, staffs and students from various Nursing colleges and well-wishers and friends of Sumanahalli Society.

To recognize and appreciate the tireless service rendered in the field of Leprosy, Sumanahalli Started the Dr. Hansen’s Award. The awardees for the year 2016-17 were:Dr. N. Mani Mozhi – Head Medical coordination AIFO- India, Bangalore, National Consultant -NLEP, Central Leprosy Division, MoHFW, Government of India, who was working in the field of Leprosy since 1983.  Dr. D. Adihisayanathan – who joined Sumanahalli in the year 1985 as a Para- Medical worker and in the year 2000 was appointed to the post of Non – Medical supervisor in SET- (Survey Education and Treatment) and Chief coordinator in 2012.  He has served for 40 years in this field of Leprosy and still continues his service as a field coordinator of Sumanahalli LRTC.

ASCLA West Youth Coordinators' Encounter

The Youth Coordinators of the different Provinces and Delegations under the Association of Claretians in Asia (ASCLA) West Conference gathered at the Provincial House of Bangalore in Malleswaram, Bengaluru, India, for the ASCLA West Youth Ministry Coordinators' Encounter from Monday, 30th of January to Sunday, 5th of February.

Brother Carlos Verga, General Prefect of Youth Ministry and Vocation, who called for this encounter and main resource person, spoke on various themes like youth ministry and pastoral vocations from a congregational perspective, the challenges of youth ministry and pastoral vocations, the objectives and criteria of our Youth Ministry and the vocations for the congregation. Likewise, other resource persons were also invited during the Encounter. Fr. Regi SDB in his session spoke on how to be a youth animator and goals and principles of youth ministry. Fr. Divya Paul, the Bangalore diocese youth director presented a paper on CHALLENGES AND DYNAMICS OF YOUTH MINISTRY. The presentation included how to animate our youth in our parishes and institutions in the changing scenario of globalization, technology and changing values.

The encounter had been a platform for the participants to know each other and to plan out future programmes in the respective Organisms. The participants were enriched by the sharing by different youth animators and decided to actively participate in the youth ministry of the congregation to make this mission more vibrant and dynamic. World Disability Day Celebration

On December 3, 2016 Snehajyothi, Centre for the physically challenged, celebrated its 15th Annual Day and the World Disability Day. The day was marked by an awareness walk across the streets of Athani with slogans of equality and opportunity and not to treat the disabled as cursed or burden in the society. On that day the students of Snehajyothi presented various cultural programs which were well appreciated by the guests and inmates alike. Shri. Amareshwara Maharaja, a well-known swami of Athani, Mr. Mahaveer Padnad, congress leader, Mr. Dange, who donated uniform to all our students and Dr. Kumbar, Health Department Athani, were the main guests present on the day. On the previous day of the celebration, on we had organized annual sports day for the students and prizes were distributed to the winners.

World AIDS Day Programme

Sumanahalli has been working since 1977 for the Welfare and rehabilitation of persons affected by Leprosy, HIV/AIDS and Person with Disabilities; and since last 8 years we are working for HIV/AIDS destitute by providing residential care for 25 patients and also through various awareness and training programme in villages, schools and colleges.

As part of “Continuing Nursing Programme” Sumanahalli Society, in collaboration with Shri Lakshmi College of Nursing, organised half-day seminar on the eve of World AIDS Day Programme on the 1 December 2016 at Shri Lakshmi College of Nursing Auditorium, Magadi Road, Bengaluru. It was followed by Silent March from Shri Lakshmi College to Sumanahalli, SUPPORT (Community Care centre) and concluded with taking of pledge along with inmates. There were 1210 nursing students from 10 different nursing colleges who participated in the programme. The Rtd. Deputy DGP Mr, Ponnappa, Founder of Sri Lakshmi Educational Group, Fr. Lindo Francis CMF, Director of Sumanahalli Society, Fr. Thomas Thanniyanickal CMF, Director of SUPPORT HIV Centre, Mrs. Bhagyalakshmi, Principal of Shri Lakshmi College of Nursing, Mr. Michael Babu Raj, Deputy Director of K H P T were the dignitaries of the day.
